Are university Vice-Chancellor’s (VCs) overpaid? A new report says weak governance is to blame.
The recent Council on Higher Education (CHE) report on executive pay points to troubling weaknesses within South African university governance. It highlights excessive remuneration fueled by a lack of oversight and transparency.
Recommendations for University Councils
The CHE urges councils to: – improve decision documentation, – implement performance evaluations, – link VC pay to transformation goals, and – explore performance-based pay for all staff.
A Call for National Discussion
This report raises critical questions and recommendations: Should council governance structures change? Should honorarium-given “representative” structures be replaced by better-remunerated professional boards? Do councils need formal qualifications, and what should this be? How can we ensure proper oversight? What successful governance models can we learn from globally?
Time for Change
The CHE report is a wake-up call. How can we create stronger, more accountable university governance for the future of South African higher education? Private higher education is also implicated, and a similar study is being proposed for them. Perhaps the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation should make the report public.
